If you live in an area where severe weather is a concern, you’ll know how nerve-wracking it can be to try and prepare your home for the worst, while always hoping for the best. Severe weather keeps getting worse, and repairs keep getting more expensive. While you may feel helpless at times, there are a few things you can do for your home to try and minimize the damage.
Always Keep an Eye on Your Home
No matter the time of year, take the time to check up on your home. Carefully look at it from top to bottom and assess what types of maintenance it needs. Look at the roof, gutters, pipes, HVAC system, and windows. If you see any problems with any aspect of your home, make sure you take the right steps to have them fixed and repaired.
Waterproof Walls, Windows, and Doors
The exterior of your home is your best line of defense in keeping what’s inside safe. One of the best things you can do is keep the exterior of your home protected. Add weather-stripping around all of your windows and doors for maximum protection against moisture, and check them throughout the year to make sure they’re holding up. The exterior paint on your home can also be changed to help fight water vapor—we recommend using a water based exterior paint because it will help protect against damage, and it also expands and contracts with the siding on your home.
Protect Your Home with Insurance
If you’re worried about your home and want that extra line of protection your homeowner’s insurance can help. Most policies will offer protection against storm damage from wind, hail, and even lightning. Read your policy carefully though, most do not cover flood or earthquake damage. If you’re seriously worried about your home flooding or getting damaged due to an earthquake, consider purchasing flood or earthquake insurance.
