Have you ever gotten overwhelmed by looking at paint swatches? Can’t decide if you want to give your home a bold, new look, or simply give it a fresh coat of its existing color?

When it comes to painting the interior of your home, it’s true what they say: there really are endless possibilities of what direction you can choose to go. And it’s easy for any homeowner to become overwhelmed and frustrated when looking at countless options for interior and exterior paint color. That’s where we at Stanford Painting come in. We want to ensure that you get the design results you envision as well as enjoy the process.

To get started, here are some first steps to point you in the right direction of your perfect paint color.

Color Wheels Exist for a Reason!

Color wheels are a great tool for pointing an overwhelmed painter in the right direction.

While it may sound like common sense, the colors in a color wheel that are next to each other will compliment each other. If you have already chosen your primary wall color, studying its surrounding colors on the color wheel may determine what can look best either as a trim color or in other rooms of your home.

Follow the 60-30-10 Rule

Choosing interior paint colors in particular becomes all the more simple when you follow the 60-30-10 rule. This rule follows one simple concept: have 60% of the colors in a given space be composed of a dominant color, have 30% of the colors be a secondary color, and the remaining 10% be an accent color. Following this will give your home a lasting design impact!

This rule can also be applied if you are painting the exterior of your home rather than the interior. 60% of the color can be applied to your home’s main surface, 30% to the window trimmings, and 10% as an accent color, such as a pop of color on the front door.
